LUNG CANCER

Lung cancer is the most common malignancy in men and second only to breast cancer in women. It accounts for approximately 25% of all cancer deaths annually in the USA, and is the number one cause of cancer death in men and women. Smoking is the number one risk factor for lung cancer.

Treatment of Lung Cancer

There are various treatment options which can be used alone or in combination depending on the location and stage of the tumor. Other considerations include patient's co-morbidities and ability to undergo surgical resection.

  • Surgery - removes part or all of the lung to eliminate the tumor
  • Radiation Therapy - uses high energy rays to destroy the cancer cells
  • Chemotherapy - uses a combination of drugs to destroy the cancers cells

Surgery and Radiation therapy control the disease locally, while chemotherapy controls the disease systemically by been carried in the blood stream throughout the body.
